Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.

The Early Years

Early Years. Born as Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was the middle child of Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King.

The Assassination

Assassinated on 4 April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee while lending support to a sanitation workers’ strike. He was shot by James Earl Ray at approximately 7:05 P.M. Ray’s bullet struck King as he was standing on his balcony at the Lorraine Motel; King died approximately one hour later.
